How to Create an Impactful Election Brochure or Postcard A successful election campaign starts with compelling printed materials that grab voters' attention and drive action. Whether you're running for local office or a larger Ontario election campaign, your direct mail pieces - such as brochures and postcards - are a vital tool to connect with constituents. Here’s how to ensure your election mailers are effective, engaging, and deliver real results. 1. Choose the Right Format for Your Message Your election campaign materials should be designed with impact and clarity. Depending on your budget and objectives, you can choose between: • Postcards: Short, punchy, and cost-effective. Ideal for quick messages and reminders about voting dates. • Roll Folded Brochures: Great for providing more detailed information about your platform, achievements, and voter policies. • Half fold Brochure: A middle ground between a postcard and a brochure, offering more space while remaining visually engaging. Pro Tip: Consider an oversized postcard to stand out in the mailbox. 2. Use Strong, High-Quality Images Voters connect with people, so make sure to include: • A high-resolution headshot that presents you as approachable, confident, and professional. • Photos of you engaging with the community - attending events, talking with constituents, and working on issues that matter. • Local landmarks or recognizable backgrounds to establish a connection with your audience. Pro Tip: Avoid cluttered backgrounds. A clean, high-contrast image with good lighting ensures better print quality and a more polished look. 3. Craft Clear, Engaging Content Your message should be simple, direct, and persuasive. Break up content into short paragraphs, bullet points, or infographics to enhance readability. What to Include: • A clear introduction: Who you are and what position you're running for. • Your key platform points: Summarize your policies in 3–5 bullet points. • Why should voters support you: What makes you different from your competitors? • A strong Call-to-Action (CTA): Tell voters exactly what to do next - "Vote on [date]!", "Visit my website!" (and include it!), "Follow me on social media!" (and include your tags!) Pro Tip: Keep text conversational yet authoritative. Avoid jargon and write as if you’re speaking directly to a voter. 4. Maintain a Consistent Tone and Style Your election brochure or campaign mailer should reflect your personality and values. Tone Guidelines: • Confident but relatable: Speak with authority but remain approachable. • Positive and solutions-focused: Highlight what you’ll accomplish, rather than attacking opponents. • Clear and inspiring: Use active, persuasive language to energize your audience. Pro Tip: A strong slogan or tagline can help reinforce your message - keep it short, memorable, and issue-driven. 5. Use Branding, Colours, and Design Wisely Colour psychology plays a big role in voter perception. Choose a colour scheme that aligns with your campaign’s message. Additional Design Tips: • Use your campaign logo consistently across all materials. • Stick to 2-3 fonts max for readability. • Ensure there’s a clear visual hierarchy - your name and position should be the most prominent. Pro Tip: Keep designs clean and uncluttered. Whitespace is your friend! It makes content more digestible and visually appealing. 6. Include Key Contact Information Make it easy for voters to learn more about your campaign: ✔ Website: A direct link where voters can explore your platform in detail. ✔ Phone Number: For voters who prefer direct engagement. ✔ Social Media Handles: Encourage engagement and sharing. ✔ QR Code (Optional): A quick way to direct voters to a voter registration form or website. Pro Tip: Double-check that all links and contact details are correct and up to date before printing! 7.
